On many school days, books stay on shelves or desks. On SIPC's World Book Day 2026, books moved everywhere: into costumes, conversations, performances, posters and even student‑published titles. From kindergarten to middle school, our campus felt less like a timetable and more like a story unfolding in real time.

Student-centred Literacy in Action

At SIPC, World Book Day is not just another event on the calendar, but a lens for what literacy can be in an international school. Through Dress Up as a Book Character, the Make A Book Contest, the Read Aloud Contest, Buddy Reading and the Poster Project, students engaged with texts in many ways—wearing them, writing them, discussing them, performing them and designing around them—creating a rich, student-centred and globally minded experience of reading and writing.

Buddy Reading is a good example. Older and younger students sit side by side on sofas and small desks, helping each other follow plots and laugh at the same moments. Reading, in this context, becomes a bridge across ages, language levels and life experience.

Recognizing Students as Authors

A defining feature of this year’s World Book Day was the Make A Book Contest. By publishing and displaying student books, SIPC positions children’s writing not as temporary assignments, but as contributions to the school’s intellectual and creative life. This recognition builds a sense of agency: students see that their ideas can take printed form, reach real audiences and stand alongside professional texts in everyday learning spaces.

This year's award‑winning books highlight the breadth of our students' interests and voices. From super cats and science adventures to galaxies, elements, typhoons and neighbourhood stories, these titles show that SIPC students are using writing to document a wide world of animals, science, space, nature and human relationships.

From Page to Voice

Publishing is only one part of authorship; another is learning to give one's text a voice. In classroom Read Aloud sessions, students shared poems, short stories, chapter extracts and their own writing with peers in English. These moments turned classrooms into small theaters of language, where students practised pacing, intonation and audience awareness—skills that sit at the intersection of literacy, communication and global competence.

Alongside Read Aloud, SIPC also held a wholeschool Reading Contest. Classes tracked how many pages they completed, and G4 Saturn emerged as the winning class with an impressive total of 4,007 pages read. This simple challenge helped students see that sustained reading is not just an individual habit, but also something a class can work towards together and be proud of.

At SIPC, World Book Day is less a event and more a compass. It points towards the kind of readers and writers we hope our students will become—curious, reflective and globally minded young people who can use stories to understand, connect with and contribute to a changing world.
